Depends on how you judge thesevthings ibguesd.
If you take 100 years of football history I'd say that Arsenal have been a big club longer than anyone. Liverpool were nothing special until the Shankly era and Man Utd only became hugely popular post Munich. Arsenal won 3 consecutive league titles back in the 30's and have a solid history since. Chelsea were never a big club til the moody Russian turned up while Man City were potentially big but didnt really take off til t Arab wedge fell into their laps. All in all,an almost immpossible question to answer.

The population of London is of course is far bigger than Sunderland, that is a fact. However so are the number of clubs in and around London. I am confident that the percentage of people who live in or are from Sunderland who support Sunderland is very high.
Yes of course they have big support they are a one club city and to my knowledge have very few, if any, proffesional smaller clubs on the outskirts.

I dislike comparisons like this. Who cares?
You could make arguments between us and Everton, Villa, Leeds and Newcastle. None of us win anything.

If you consider Londons population against Sunderlands then your point gets watered down a little. What i will say though is away from those clubs favoured by plastic glory hunting types,i notice people wearing our colours far more than any other clubs.

West Ham are bigger than Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough. If there are any other clubs up there we are bigger than them too.
Newcastle have a bigger media presence though and apparently their fans are the most loyal* fans in the history of sport.
Except for when they used to get 12,000 in the old 2nd division.

This is one argument I have had frequently over the years about Newcastle and I believe this applies to Sunderland. I have nothing against either club, totally agree their attendances even when out of the top flight and away support is impressive but I take it with a pinch of salt.
In reality, there is only one club in these two big cities. In London you not only have the Premier League sides but also smaller sides like Wimbledon. It is also the case that far more people from the South support teams in the North (well Liverpool and Man United). I know it happens, but you will find far less born and bred Northerners who support a team from the South. For the overwhelming majority, if you like football are are from Newcastle/Sunderland- that is who you support.

West Ham are bigger. Not by as much as some think though. They've got a proper following and early history is very decent, they won the league 6 times but have done even less than we have in the modern era.

We used to do this at school, working out how big clubs were using a top trumps kind of criteria, average attendance, years in top flight, European trophies, league and both cup wins, even stuff like away support.
